Natural Hair Care in Tropical Environments
The Tropics are known for their white and sandy beaches, blue glistening waters, warm weather, and the requirement of less clothing, flavorful and colorful foods and much more. The list goes on and on hence why a lot of tourists visit the Caribbean every year. But, what about caring for your natural hair in the tropics? The weather in the tropics is like the weather for the summer in the USA/Canada. However, this whether is all around with different intensities at different periods of the year. So, while we’re vacationing in Jamaica, Barbados or the Cayman Islands how do we maintain the health of our hair?
Here are 3 natural hair care tips for tropical environments:
1. Moisturize, moisturize – The hot temperature means moisture loss which can result in frizz, tangles and much more. Hence, we must keep your hair moisturized at all time. I believe the best way to moisturize your hair is by doing the LOC method. This ensures that your hair is moisturized and that it stays moisturized for an extended period. You can check out our blog post on the LOC method to see more details.
2. Protect from the Heat – it is warm and hot in the Caribbean. It is great for suntanning, defrosting and much more. However, the UV rays from the sun can harm our hair. If we’re in the sun a lot, it will penetrate against it. It can even break down the protective layer of our hair strands and make it susceptible to damage. Hence, we recommend protecting it from the heat before going outside. You can apply a light heat-protectant or use an oil such as grapeseed oil.
3. Reduce Oil Application – When the heat encounters grease it usually melts. Rocking your natural hair with oil dripping down your neck or forehead, is not good. Nor is it healthy as it can result in forehead or back acne. Hence, go easy on the oil application. Don’t use too many oils on your hair. Or, you can use a lightweight oil such as grapeseed oil, coconut oil or even jojoba oil.
4. Do High Top Styles – Buns and high ponytails should be your favorite hairstyle. Letting your hair down usually causes you to feel more heat on your neck or your forehead. The heat along with the product can cause you to break out. And no one wants to break out while there vacationing and living their best life. Hence, we recommend doing up top styles. These include buns, high ponytails, half up half down, etc.
