We are currently slow traveling in San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala.

It is a small town of approx. 13,000 residents located on Lake Atitlan about 4 hours south of the capital, Guatemala City.  

Most of the residents are indigenous  Mayans and speak the language Tz’utujil as their first language.  Many older people speak no Spanish at all.

The town is located at the base of San Pedro Volcano and that is where the city gets its name.    The indigenous name of the town is Tz’unun Ya’.

San Pedro is a forward thinking townthat has banned the use of plastic, which includes straws and plastic bags. 

San Pedro is famous for its Spanish school and that is the primary reason that we decided to come here.  We attend San Pedro Spanish School.  It is a delightful school with amazing one on one instruction with teachers who are committed to you meeting your Spanish language goals.  

Our Spanish teacher, Clara is kind, patient and a master at Spanish grammar.  Ruth adores her and she has modified our classes so that Ruth is entertained and comfortable.

We stayed with a host family for our first 6 weeks in San Pedro,  The homestay was arranged by the school.  The Tuch Gonzalez family was wonderful.  

Quina and Mingo are a lovely couple with a large family who make it a point to make each and every student they host feel welcomed and fully immersed in Guatemalan culture.  

Ruth and I learned to make tamales and other local foods.

We are loving our adventures in San Pedro.
