Questions to Ask a Hairdresser Before You Let Them Wash and Style Your Hair. Do not let some well meaning stylist destroy your hair unless you are into to those sort of things.
Back in the USA, we love going our hairdresser – at least I know I did.
It was a home away from home where we would bond with the girls, release our troubles as well as get some great jokes that will make our belly hurt.
However, being abroad can be a whole new ballgame, especially if you have natural hair. You must ask the hairdresser or the salon how they handle natural hair aka black hair. Not everyone knows how to take care of our black hair so we gotta make sure that we are going to the right place.
Here are 4 Questions to Ask A Hairdresser Before You Let Them Wash and Style Your Hair:
1. What type of hair products do you use?
For this question, you want to ensure that they are using natural products in your hair. These products will nourish your scalp and hair strands to have healthy hair strands. Other products with chemicals that we should avoid as well as chemicals that we cannot pronounce, should be avoided at all times.
For example:
-The shampoo used should have no sulfates (or it is diluted)
– The conditioner should not have silicones, dimethicones, or any other form of cones
– The deep conditioner should have fortifying organic ingredients such as butter and oils
– Moisturizers without parabens and minerals oils.
2. How do you detangle natural hair?
Detangling is key because you want your hair to be detangled “correctly” to preserve your length and not take it away. Your hairstylist would detangle using a Denman brush, wide-tooth comb, or even their fingers. And more importantly, it should be when your hair wet. It can be saturated with conditioner or deep conditioner to melt the tangles away as you detangle.
3. What styles can you do on my natural hair?
As a naturalista, there is a catalog of hairstyles to choose from. You can wear wash-n go’s, braid-outs, twist-outs, buns, and much more. But, what can your hairstylist do? If they are doing a wash and go, do they know the perfect product combination to do without causing flakes? As well as, can they do a twist-out using a product that will not cause frizz and frame your face well? And finally, can they do a high bun without pulling on your edges and laying your baby hairs?
4. How do you suggest I maintain the hairstyle or the health of my hair?
The answer to this question will allow you to determine if they are right for you. As a professional, after interacting with your hair or learning about the products, and techniques you utilize in your hair regimen, they can provide you with key advice. This advice being how to maintain the style they placed in your hair a while ago or suggested for you. They will also provide you with tips and tricks to maintain the longevity of your hair strands.
When asking these questions, ask them in a conversational tone. You don’t want to give off the impression that the hairstylist doesn’t know what he/she is doing. Or, explain the reason behind the questions such as previous bad experiences with stylists.
