HOW TO FIND BLACK JOY WHEN THE WORLD IS ON FIRE

Black people are suffering.  We are in mental and physical turmoil.  We aren’t safe.  We aren’t respected. And in many spaces we aren’t wanted.

I left the US and started traveling full-time because I was over being a disposable commodity that existed solely at the discretion of White America.  I wanted a change.

And yet, leaving isn’t a reality for everyone and even for those who have left like myself, there is still pain in watching those left behind suffer and be abused.

James Baldwin once famously stated that:

I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.

We are beautiful, divine, magical, intelligent and creative people.  And no matter where we are on this earth, we need to protect our light.

Here are three tips to save yourself and your sanity when the world is on fire.

(1) Reclaim your space

Find a safe space.  BE it your house, your bedroom, your bathroom, wherever  BUT lay claim on it as your holy and divine space. Cleanse it with sage and do not let negativity into the space.  No social media.  No TV.  No print media.  This is a space for you to listen to some Erykah Badu or Jill Scott and chill.  This is the space for you to meditate.

(2) Cultivate Joy

You deserve to be happy.  You were put on the earth to radiate and receive happiness and joy. Do things that make you happy.  Watch a movie you love, bake cookies, sing, dance, cry.

Let whatever you need out, so that joy can come in.

(3) Do something

Write an op-ed, register to vote, register others to vote, run for office, support another woman in her journey to run for office, donate a dollar to a cause you support.
