A few weeks ago, I took my daughter to the the August Wilson Center. She had a great time. She was excited to hear the violinist Regina Carter perform. As a bonus, Regina Carter took time after the performance to chat with my daughter.

My daughter had a chance to see Regina Carter live in concert. My daughter, Ruth is an amazing violinist, and I joyfully took her to the show.

The concert was amazing. Regina took time to chat with my daughter, and she even autographs a poster for my daughter’s room. Regina’s music inspires my daughter to further her violin. practice. It is amazing for my daughter to see someone who looks like her playing at that level.

Providing Black children with a solid musical education is essential. It gives them a chance to connect with their heritage and learn about their culture. It also teaches them discipline, focus, and teamwork. Regina Carter is an amazing example of what can be accomplished with a musical education.

Your child may not grow up to be a world-renowned violinist like Regina Carter, but that doesn’t mean that the experience won’t be life-changing. Carter took the time to chat with your daughter after her performance, and that one interaction could spark a lifelong love of music.

The American Musical Tradition Is Largely a Black Musical Tradition

Seeing Regina Carter live certainly solidified the importance of providing our Black children with a solid music education. I realized that in order to appreciate and understand the American music tradition, you must understand the Black musical tradition.

Regina highlighted this idea in her performance by playing everything from covers of classic Motown—which she described as “Black people’s music on the radio”—to jazz, blues and gospel. She also took time to explain each song’s history and cultural roots before she began to play it. I felt like my daughter was getting an amazing education on the power and influence of Black music from someone that truly understands its impact.

Regina also shared stories of incredible musicians we should pay attention to, including some who tour regularly in Europe but don’t get any recognition back home. She reminded us why it’s important to support these artists and celebrate their talent wherever we can.

It was a real honor to have my daughter witness Regina Carter perform her magic up close, and I will be forever grateful for the inspiring conversations we had about the beauty of Black music that day.

When Regina talked to my daughter and I, it became very clear why advocating for music education for Black children is so essential. Even if a child does not become a professional musician, the discipline and focus necessary to create and perform music can serve them in any field.

On top of that, there is the benefit of pride knowing one has mastered a difficult skill. Music is an art form—one that requires time and effort. Having the skills associated with producing beautiful music gives people something tangible to be proud of.

Finally, there are the innumerable benefits of engaging with art, which includes visual art, theater, and dance. Music is a great way for children to express emotions in a safe and healthy manner. Music can bring people together in ways more powerful than almost anything else. Listening to Regina play was an amazing experience that made me proud of my daughter’s curiosity and appreciation of beauty—a beauty found in the sounds created by this incredible violinist.
